Gozo is known to provide a tranquil haven for a tempo and scene change. The charm of Malta's sister Island is immediately apparent; it's greener, more rural and smaller, with life's rhythms dictated by the seasons, fishing and agriculture.
Steeped in myth, Gozo is thought to be the legendary Calypso's isle of Homer's Odyssey - a peaceful, mystical backwater. Baroque churches and old stone farmhouses dot the countryside. Gozo's rugged landscape and spectacular coastline await exploration with some of the Mediterranean's best dive sites.
The island also comes complete with historical sites, forts and amazing panoramas, as well as one of the archipelago's best-preserved prehistoric temples, Ġgantija.
Gozo also possesses a night life and cultural calendar all of its own, with some great dining out.
Megaliths, medieval dungeons and Calypso's Cave – The Maltese Islands are positively mythic. The narrow meandering streets of their towns and villages lead to the main square, which is invariably dominated by the huge baroque church. As the countryside is dotted with medieval towers, wayside chapels and the oldest known human structures in the world, the Islands have rightly been described as an open-air museum.
The Maltese archipelago lies virtually at the centre of the Mediterranean, 93 km south of Sicily and 288 km north of Africa. The archipelago consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino with a total population of over 400,000 inhabitants occupying an area of 316 square kilometres.
Malta is the largest island and the cultural, commercial and administrative centre. Gozo is the second largest island and is more rural, characterised by fishing, tourism, crafts and agriculture. Comino, the smallest of the trio, has one hotel and is largely uninhabited.
With superbly sunny weather, attractive beaches, a thriving night life and 7,000 years of intriguing history, there is a great deal to see and do.
These pictures provide a taste of what awaits you...
A NOTE FROM THE ARTIST
DORANNE ALDEN CARUANA
As a professional artist/art teacher with over 30 years experience in the arts, I have hosted my own groups of aspiring artists for a few years now - I am known as a dedicated teacher who loves sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm while encouraging her students, by using positive criticism as her main method of teaching art - My own work is vibrant and bold and I like to think that it is a reflection of my personality and philosophy on life. I firmly believe that, as Matisse once said, 'There are always flowers for those who want to see them.'
I am happy to announce that I am hosting my next painting holiday on the Mediterranean island of Gozo will be held from
- 30th MARCH To 6th APRIL 2019 -

Your accommodation has been specially chosen for its charm and inspiring surroundings. Ta Xmun Farmhouse is a large, beautiful, 300 year old restored house of character and is located in the hilltop village of Zebbug, Gozo. When the house was restored, all works were carried out with great care, so retaining as much of it's original character as possible. As a result the property is a perfect example of a Gozitan character house, having very high ceilings on the first floor, with metre thick walls on the ground floor, arches, 2 loggias, stone floors, and patterned tiles through out. This attention to detail has contributed to the overall atmosphere, keeping it relaxed and romantic.

Gozo Painting Holiday March 2018

Gozo Painting Holiday, April 2016
Many, many thanks for an idyllic & inspirational seven days spent painting & exploring the joys of Gozo. Having taken part in a number of painting holidays abroad none have provided such a genuine insight into the culture, history & cuisine of a place & its people.
From being met at the airport the whole holiday experience was effortless & thoroughly relaxing, allowing painters & guests to switch onto the gentle rhythms of the island. Your website presented a picture of an unspoilt, idyllic sun-drenched island, I am delighted that neither Ta Xmun Farmhouse, the island or hospitality from Fiona & yourself disappointed.
Gozo provided a multitude of easily reached quiet venues to paint, be they dramatic cliffscapes, exquisite turquoise beaches, stunning hilltop villages or scenes of rural life. Your teaching & demonstrations were very supportive & encouraging, building confidence among students in composition & technique whilst still allowing more experienced painters to explore & develop particular aspects of their work.
The glowing colours of the Mediterranean along with your infectious energy & passion for art will stay with me long after returning home.

Dearest Doranne, Thank you for the best Holiday I have ever had! You were so kind and I can't thank you enough. It is an incredibly beautiful house... Your house on Gozo is also a wonderful place - I feel so lucky to have joined you there. Each room had such charm, and character. I loved my bedroom, with it's high ceiling and view of the pool. It was so peaceful and tranquil after the stresses of the day!! You and Fiona made us feel so welcome and our delicious picnics and meals each day were wonderful. I have fallen totally in love with your lovely Gozo and you have made it even more special. The beautiful spots you found for us to paint were so inspiring. I can imagine being there and applying even more of your beautiful Cobalt Turquoise to another 'masterpiece'! You have inspired me to be more creative, and helped me to see all those amazing colours! Your wonderful itinerary, varied to the days weather, was fascinating. Painting in the best places, visiting Victoria and so many other well planned outings. Your hospitality was very kind, and added yet another sparkling facet to our week. Ohhhhh! What elso can I say! I just want to say a very very huge "THANK YOU"!! .... counting the days til the next time! C.H. UK
ABOUT THE WORKSHOPS AT TA XMUN FARMHOUSE “From the moment my daughters and me stepped into Ta'Xmun Farmhouse in Gozo we were overwhelmed with excitement knowing we surrounded by other artists. A sense of peacefulness and tranquillity flowed through my mind and body as I felt the urge of creativeness wanting to paint a landscape scenery on a piece of watercolour paper in bright colours! We had a wonderful, fulfilled long weekend and shall definitely come again and again. It was so much more than ‘only’ an art weekend!” - previous attendee
“We really enjoyed our weekend painting with Doranne in her beautiful old farmhouse. The beds were comfortable the atmosphere relaxed and friendly. It was fun to experiment and try new techniques, and to learn from Doranne’s experience and creativity” – previous attendee 'An Unforgettable Painting Holiday in Gozo and Malta By Lisa Takahashi · On January 27, 2014 Doranne Alden Caruana is a Maltese born artist with over 30 years’ experience in creating and teaching art. 18/05/2014 - Residency with the artist - Recently, my husband and I spent a short time visiting the island of Gozo. Unfortunately we were obliged to return home early but were fortunate enough to snatch a week exploring what was for us a new part of the world. Thanks to our hostess, Doranne Alden and her family, we enjoyed many of the cultural, historic and physical beauties of this very ancient part of the world. Living in a beautiful old home, surrounded by the vibrancy of Doranne's paintings and sharing with her and her family the history of Gozo became a cultural feast for two old retired Australian visual art educators. The peace of Zebbug, the wild coastline, The imprint of the past, the mellow light of evening that softened the harsh landscape of day and the brilliant colour and warmth of welcome behind the blue door are etched in our memories. It was a sketching holiday well worthwhile. Thankyou Doranne, Simon, Fiona and Alex Julie and Bill Hawthorn
